The gloves were off during a Senate hearing today that featured National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases honcho and America’s lawn gnome, Dr. Anthony Fauci being grilled by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.

The subject was “gain of function” research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that was funded, in part, by a grant from Fauci’s institute to a research firm called EcoHealth Alliance. “Gain of function” is just a shorthand way of saying that they were trying to make an existing virus more virulent and/or deadly than it is under normal conditions. Sort of like the Wuhan virus.

The fireworks started when Paul asked Fauci if he’d like to revise and extend his comments from a May hearing in which he denied any funding from his organization went to the Wuhan lab for “gain of function” research.

“Dr Fauci, knowing it is a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish to retract your statement of May 11 where you claimed that the NIH never funded gain of function research in Wuhan?”

Fauci denied having lied, though we know for a fact that Fauci’s organization did fund “gain of function” research at the very lab where sane people think the Wuhan virus originated. My colleague at RedState, Scott Hounsell, did some stellar investigative work and documented the financial links from Fauci to EcoHealth Alliance and revealed emails in which Fauci was thanked by EcoHealth for covering for them. (See here, here, and here.

Paul also made it very clear that he considered Fauci at least partially responsible for the deaths, misery, and financial losses inflicted upon the United States and the world through Fauci’s hubris and incompetence.

In the aftermath of today’s hearing, Paul tweeted out proof that Fauci had been involved in the Wuhan lab funding fiasco.

I don’t think Fauci acquitted himself all that well despite outlets like CNN blatantly lying to cover for Fauci. The fact that Fauci funded the Wuhan lab is public record. Just about the entire world now believes that the Wuhan virus was engineered in that lab as part of “gain of function” research. In fact, that has gone from being a “conspiracy theory” that would get you banned on Facebook and Twitter to being the dominant theory of the virus’ origin.

You can’t help but notice that Fauci was one of the loudest voices claiming that a lab leak was impossible.

Nothing described Fauci’s response, and his inability to answer any part of Paul’s questioning without going into elaborate evasions to change the subject from what Paul was asking to what Fauci wanted to talk about than his line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

Right about now, retirement must be looking damned good to Fauci. We’ve gone from vendors selling Fauci bobbleheads and Fauci prayer candles to Fauci being accused of lying to Congress and unable to make a credible defense.

If the GOP takes back the Senate next year, and things are looking really good for the Stupid Party, so good that they may not be able to screw things up. If that comes to pass, the treatment Fauci received at the hands of Senator Paul today will look like a staid and dignified tea party.
